Communications and Grants Manager
Reports to: Director of Development
The mission of Inspirica (formerly St. Luke’s LifeWorks) is to break the cycle of homelessness by helping people achieve – and maintain – permanent housing and stability in their lives. We are one of the largest providers of services to the homeless in Connecticut. Each night, we house 350 people (over 1,000 individuals per year, including 250 children). Our residential facilities include emergency shelters, transitional housing, permanent supportive housing, and deeply affordable housing. We serve individuals across the spectrum of the homeless, including single men, single women, families, people with mental illness, and people living with HIV/AIDS.
Inspirica is one of only a few organizations nationally that is able to address both the physical component of homelessness (residential services) and its underlying root causes (support services) on a single, powerful, end-to-end platform. In addition to housing, we provide vocational training, workforce education, job placement, housing placement, job & housing retention support, children's services, early childhood & parenting services, case management, and more. We further collaborate with a vast array of external partners to provide medical/dental care, mental health care, and substance abuse treatment.

The Communications and Grants Manager will serve as Inspirica’s resident storyteller, bringing our programs and services to life for a variety of audiences, including funders, volunteers, and other stakeholders. This cross-functional position within the Development Department plays a vital role in helping the organization secure the funding it needs to continue its work to break the cycle of homelessness, including a primary responsibility for grant writing. Demonstrated talent and passion for storytelling and writing, as well as impeccable organizational skills, are essential.
Write, design, and produce collateral that drives engagement with stakeholders (corporate and individual sponsors, volunteers, board directors, government officials, and members of the general public) and educates about Inspirica’s mission, programs, events, and accomplishments/results. Responsibilities include:
Design and write digital and physical marketing collateral, such as presentations and pitch decks, brochures, event flyers, social media assets, and other branded materials
Write annual report, quarterly e-newsletters, and end of fiscal year and end of calendar year reports
Increase outreach to and visibility within the community through social engagement platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn, etc.
Update and maintain Inspirica’s website, including programs, events, and results pages
Develop relationships and processes with program staff to identify features on programs, services, and client success stories
Working with the development team and/or branding consultant, assist in the production of videos that promote Inspirica’s mission, programs, and/or events
Create electronic communications in Constant Contact, e.g. e-blasts for events, e-newsletters, etc.
Maintain and update Constant Contact mailing lists for various constituencies
Work with external vendors to produce printed materials on timeline and within budget
Ensure the use of consistent design standards, messages, and terminology across the organization’s communications and maintain in-house policies related to branding and communication
In consultation with media relations consultant, write press releases, op-eds, talking points, and other materials for placement in local and/or national media, including radio, television, and/or podcasts
Assist development and special events team, as needed
Play a lead role in managing and securing funding for a robust portfolio of grants that are critical to the sustainability of Inspirica’s programs and services. Responsibilities include:
Develop and write grant proposals, concept notes, letters of inquiry and reports for current and prospective funders, including public, private, and corporate foundations as well as select government grants
Perform research to evaluate prospects for grants and investigate new sources of funding
Working with the Chief Development Officer and Director of Development, cultivate relationships with public, private, and corporate foundations
Interview relevant stakeholders and coordinate with key program staff to develop effective and compelling proposals in support of both specific and general organizational priorities
Ensure that all proposals/reports reflect the objectives of the grantor, advance the goals of Inspirica and the grantor, include metrics that compellingly demonstrate meaningful impact, and adequately meet the funding needs of specific programs being supported by the grant
Maintain grants calendar and funder information within Raiser’s Edge database
Ensure timely submission of grant applications and reports
Work with relevant development and program staff to ensure that all grant requirements are met
Work closely with the finance department on budgetary aspects of grant proposals/reports, including monitoring grant expenditures
Draft acknowledgement letters for grants received
Coordinate funder site visits with key Inspirica program staff, including pre-meeting research and hosting the funder on-site
Passion for Inspirica’s mission to break the cycle of homelessness
Demonstrated ability to write compelling and newsworthy stories, grant applications, articles, and other content for a variety of audiences
Two years grant writing experience
Excellent oral, written, and presentation skills
Strong ability to think strategically
Excellent organization and time-management skills
Ability to work independently and in a team environment
Ability to be flexible and handle multiple priorities under tight time constraints
Solid design instincts – experience with design software preferred
Bachelor’s degree required
Experience with and/or knowledge of Raiser’s Edge a plus
Experience with grants writing a plus
Experience with Constant Contact, Sprout Social, and/or Square Space a plus
