Support Services Associate - Employment Services and SOAR
Inspirica is the largest provider of services to the homeless in lower Fairfield County. Each night we house approximately 350 people (850 per year, including 250 children). We operate 11 facilities in Stamford and provide an extensive array of support services including: vocational training (home health aide certification); workforce education; job placement; housing placement; job & housing retention support; early childhood & parenting services; children's services (including an after-school program); health care; counseling; case management; and, much more. We further provide direct access to mental health care, psychiatric care, dental care, substance abuse treatment, etc. through a network of strategic partnerships. We are one of only a few organizations nationally that has combined residential and support services under one roof in a “one-stop-shop setting.” Our ability to address both the physical aspect of homelessness and it underlying root causes on a single, powerful, end-to-end platform eliminates gaps in services, allows programs to leverage each other, and exponentially increases our clients’ success rates.

Inspirica’s Support Services (Early Childhood and Parenting Programs, Children’s Services, Jumpstart Career Program, and Job & Housing Retention) wrap around our Residential Services to provide our clients with the critical resources they need to break the cycle of homelessness. The Employment and Children’s Services Associate will divide their time between two Support Services departments.
In Employment Services, the associate will be primarily responsible for helping Inspirica clients find competitive jobs and providing assistance as needed to Inspirica’s Support Services. He/she will achieve this goal by developing and working with an extensive network of employers, searching multiple job databases, and working with clients on an individual basis to develop customized job-search plans that result in employment.
SSI/SSDI Outreach, Access, and Recovery (SOAR) is a national program designed to increase access to the disability income benefit programs administered by the Social Security Administration (SSA) for eligible adults who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness and have a serious mental illness, medical impairment, and/or a co-occurring substance use disorder.
Specific Job Duties
The Support Services Associate will report to the Director of Employment and Vocational Services.
Meet with residents of Inspirica and the community to complete intakes, create and/or update resumes, identify job openings, assist individuals with completing job applications, and help plan travel to and from interviews/jobs.
Keep track of individual’s progress by completing the Job Search Log, Job Placement Forms, and discussing weekly compliance.
Facilitate referrals for employment related needs, such as interview clothing.
Obtain training to become a SOAR representative who will coordinate with our residential case managers for referrals. These duties include:
File initial SSA/DSS applications and/or appeals on behalf of clients;
Conduct additional interviews with clients;
Gather medical records;
Write SOAR Medical Summary Reports; and
Obtain other evidence for the claim.
Other related duties as assigned.
The candidate will preferably have a college degree. Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, are important. Candidate must have computer skills, particularly a working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and the ability to job search using the Internet will serve the candidate very well. The ability to speak Spanish and or Haitian-Creole would be a definite advantage, but is not required.
The ideal candidate will work well with clients of all ages, will be an excellent and active listener, a quick learner, and will have the ability to multitask. Excellent organizational skills, patience, persistence, follow-through, and the ability to manage time well are also essential.
The candidate should work well both independently and as a member of a team; s/he will need to be self-motivated and self-directed while also taking direction and working within systems already in place. The candidate will further be outgoing, empathetic, energetic, non-judgmental and a generally positive person who easily motivates others.
