Everyone wants to be transformational. We all hope to make an impact that fundamentally changes something for the better. It’s a legacy to leave to others.
At its core, that’s what a planned gift is about.
Because legacy gifts are not part of our operating budget, they have an outsized impact. They not only help us achieve our mission, but they do it a very special way. They allow us to do things we otherwise could not do -- expand our programs, increase the number of people we reach, start new initiatives etc.
An example is our deeply affordable housing program. Inspirica is a national leader in developing this new type of housing that goes to the heart of how we will end homelessness in our community and the nation. A few years ago, we purchased two townhouses with nine two- and three-bedroom apartments that we renovated and now rent for just 20%-30% of the going rate. Both buildings break even, meaning they are self-sustaining – also a new concept.
The impact these buildings have didn’t end with the people who live in them. They served as a model for a much bigger building we are now developing (53 units for 125 people that will include an onsite Early Childhood Education Center). The development has already begun to attract the attention of national organizations and foundations who are interested in possibly replicating it.
How did we purchase the first two buildings?
The money came in part from a bequest. It transformed Inspirica, the people who live in them . . . and, we hope eventually, the way we break the cycle of homelessness across the nation.
